An excellent horror, bringing to mind the horrors of Lovecraft and Stephen King, but from the perspective of people who don't know what made the world end. The human interactions are spot on and the various personalities are depicted so well you'll recognise the character types from your own life. We've all known a Don, or a Tom, some time in our life.
My only note in the negative column is the book needed another round of edits to catch small holes in the world building and small details which could have been made more accurate.

It certainly wasn’t the book I wanted it to be.

A modest grocery store sheet cake of a read. Content warning: story includes descriptions of the trauma of war, death, and injuries following a sexual assault.

A good book for a long trip - full of King's great eye for detail and immersive storytelling, a cameo by the Overlook Hotel, and Americana - but could also have been a punchier novella.
