Okay, but this was so good?! Like, it feels familiar. I thought I knew where it was going and what the outcome would be, and this story toed the line of my expectations just long enough to completely blow me away at the end.

Also, the narration was fantastic. I had basically no knowledge or expectations for this novella and was very pleasantly surprised!

I listened to this, and the narrator was quite good. I liked learning about Carville, and the leprosarium in particular. However, I didn't find Neil's story all that compelling. I tried very hard to keep an open mind, but he was just so... privileged, and I don't feel like he really learned any lessons in regards that. Or maybe just not to my satisfaction. He still seemed to view those around him as symbols – or in terms of how they could impact/benefit him.

Learning that Ella is buried in an unmarked grave did make me tear up though. His love for her came through in the book, and it was moving.

All in all, a worthwhile read/listen to learn about a tiny, secret part of American History.

Ok. I actually really liked the ending. BUT, it was an uphill battle the whole way with this book. I also feel like this is more a historical romance with supernatural elements than a historical horror with a romance plotline. Again, Cañas's stories feel like they're for people not versed in horror/gothic tropes. Which is great, if you're that reader.

If you aren't... Well. It's a bit of a slog. There's enough good here that I'm happy I finished it, but it wasn't quite what I'd expected or hoped for.

Wow. Just, wow. It's such an intense book, and it reads so quickly that I had to keep reminding myself to actually read the descriptions of all the awful things Jay endured. But, the story is so much more than just a harrowing thriller about being eaten alive. It's a eulogy, an examination of fatherhood and childhood and the canyon (deep sea trench?) between those experiences. It's about grief and about trauma, about misunderstanding and miscommunication. It's a prodigal son story from the stomach of a sperm whale.

I think I'll be buying this one. It's going to require a thorough re-read someday.

Well, I expect this is a book I'll pick up and read through with each new novel project. It's at once advice and commiseration, acknowledgement and encouragement. This might be the most relatable and helpful writing book I've read, and it was the most enjoyable! If you're noveling, you should own this book.

Review of 'Bloom' on 'Goodreads'

Ok. First of all, this book is gorgeous. Gorgeous cover, gorgeous prose, and a plot that just freaking wallops you. It's hard to put down, but also so intense that I kept putting it down then picking it up thirty seconds later, drawn like a bee to the blackest center of a flower.

I loved the main character, Ro, and really identified with her, which upped the stakes for me considerably. But what absolutely killed me about this book was how continuously unexpected it was. Even when I guessed things correctly, when I pulled the pieces together, I still craved certain outcomes. I was just as infatuated with this story as Ro was with Ash. And just as blinded.

This is a stunning little book that does not do what you expect, even when it kinda, sorta does. It left me breathless.

I'll be honest, this is not a book I'd have ever picked up for myself. I read it as part of a work book club, and was kind of dreading it. It just didn't sound interesting, like something I'd read.

I was wrong. I loved this book. I loved its compassion, its frankness, and how much it set my mind churning over how we live our lives in our twilight years and what we truly want out of our final days.

I'll be recommending it widely, to anyone like me who has avoided it.

I just love this world. I really liked that the relationship in this book wasn't romantic, but familial, and of course the whole archeology spin is fantastic.

V. E. Schwab: Shades of Magic (Paperback, 2019, Titan comics) 4 stars

Review of 'Shades of Magic' on 'Goodreads'

I enjoy these comics, but am always a little torn with them. It's definitely the Shades of Magic world, but they don't feel like V.E. Schwab stories. They rely a little too much on cliche. They do the expected more often than not, and that just hasn't been my experience with her longer works.

Still fun to read, though.
