Bradley Peters: Sonnets from a Cell (Paperback, Brick Books) 4 stars

Poems for and about the incarcerated

Poetry is hard for me

4 stars

I have a hard time reading poetry, I'm not sure why. Maybe my brain is just so used to reading novels that it takes more effort to switch to a different mode of reading and processing. It always feels like a struggle to get through a book of poetry, but I'm glad I did. Lots of little vignettes revolving around life, prison, choices, and ramifications.

Liane M. Feldman: The Consuming Fire (Paperback, University of California Press) 5 stars

Uncovering an ancient foundation myth, and literary tour de force, obscured within the modern Bible. …

The emergence of a coherent narrative from the Pentateuch

5 stars

If you've ever read the first 5 books of the Hebrew Bible, what Christians call the Old Testament, and wondered why it was such a disjointed read and lacked coherence, this book could be for you. Dr. Feldman extracts the (P)reistly source from the Pentateuch and weaves it into a single coherent narrative encapsulating creation, exodus, and arrival into the promised land. Just the introduction is worth the price of the book. Highly recommend for anyone who's interested in modern biblical scholarship.

Way different from the first book, but still good

4 stars

While the first book had Justice of Torren right in the middle of all the action, this book has her in command of a ship and is much more focused on the political side of her character. I found it slower, but just as entertaining as the first.
