I am a very curious person so I read whatever happens to be interesting to me that week. Lots of sci fi, historical non fiction, psychology, science and engineering, memoirs, but also some popular fiction here and there.

Stephen King: Pet Sematary (Paperback, 2002, Pocket Books) 3 stars

First published in 1983, PET SEMATARY has since been regarded as one of Stephen King's …

"The soil of a man's heart is stonier."

I really enjoyed this book. I found a lot of analogies with addiction and regret. That nagging feeling that's hard to shake. King was in the middle of his addiction when he wrote this, and there are several bits taken from his actual life.

"Smucky, he was obedient."

Carmen Maria Machado: In the Dream House (Hardcover, 2019, Graywolf Press) 5 stars

For years Carmen Maria Machado has struggled to articulate her experiences in an abusive same-sex …

I really liked the writing style of the author. I feel a little guilty for finding these memoirs about abusive relationships so fascinating (I read I’m Glad My Mom Died recently), but they’re also a good tool for my awareness in my own relationships.

Neal Stephenson: Snow crash (1993, Bantam Books) 4 stars

I’m a big fan of cyberpunk, and I thought I was going to like this more since it’s such a celebrated and seminal cyberpunk novel. I actually really enjoyed the cyberpunk parts, but the romance made me cringe, and not just because it was romance. Neal Stephenson is just bad at writing romance.

Overall it’s good, I think my expectations were just too high.

It would have been a great graphic novel.

Blake Crouch: Upgrade (Hardcover, 2022, Ballantine Books) 4 stars

“You are the next step in human evolution.”

At first, Logan Ramsay isn’t sure if …

Read this on the plane to Amsterdam. I'm an ez fan of Blake Crouch, this should maybe be 3 stars, but there's no 3.5 stars option, and I like to round up.

Had a thrilling feel similar to Bourne Identity. Fun sci fi.

Sid Meier: Sid Meier's Memoir! (2020, Norton & Company Limited, W. W.) 4 stars

The life and career of the legendary developer celebrated as the “godfather of computer gaming,” …

I just really love reading stories and memoirs about video game development, more so than playing them I think.

I never played any of Sid Meier’s games, but I was very entertained by the book, and I learned a few things about design and the industry along the way!
