Often, the Holy Spirit flows through priests. Often, those who move up the hierarchy of the Episcopal Church are not the priests in whom the Holy Spirit is strongest. Bishop Curry is the exception to this rule, a man filled with the Spirit and the love that brings. I wasn't sure exactly what this book could offer on this difficult time, but I was wrong. It is part autobiography and a full on trumpeting of what the love of Jesus can do in our lives.

What I expected was a devotional book. What I got was a series of interesting and personal meditations on social justice, inclusivity, and spirituality.

Bishop Curry's experiences and ruminations make for especially interesting and challenging reading for those of us who grew up in a more evangelical tradition, but will be valuable for anyone who is doing the work of reconciling their personal, spiritual, and political lives. The last bit that covers the tensions between the American Episcopal church and the larger Anglican community were especially welcome, as they demonstrate a good model for how to work constructively together with others with whom one may have deeply different ideologies and convictions -- a skill that seems especially critical for us all to cultivate in these times when charged rhetoric is easy to come by and mutual understanding scarce.
