In Mars Rover Curiosity: An Inside Account from Curiosity's Chief Engineer, Rob Manning, the project's chief engineer, tells of bringing the groundbreaking spacecraft to life. Manning and his team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, tasked with designing a lander many times larger and more complex than any before, faced technical setbacks, fights over inadequate resources, and the challenges of leading an army of brilliant, passionate, and often frustrated experts.

This was an enjoyable read. A bit more scant on technical details than I'd have liked, but very interesting nevertheless.

A very readable account of the Curiosity project, this book moves at a lively pace. There were moments when I felt I was in the war room with the engineers, anxiously waiting to see if they can solve the problem.

All in all, a goos read. Especially if you're a space geek :).

I listened to this on Audible for free with my subscription.

A good read about Mars Rover project. These kind of books make me a bit depressed as the behind the scenes political wheeler-dealing to get funding and secure funding without getting cancelled seems no fun at all. It must be a huge relief to see the thing on the surface in the end. So much can go wrong and so many unforeseen problems make it an almost impossible feat of engineering. I learnt a lot and enjoyed the engineering side of the book.

Going to Mars is really hard. Bringing a bunch of scientific instruments and wheels is even harder. This book does a great job illustrating the challenges, technical or otherwise, facing the folks who put Curiosity together. The sky crane wasn't just a cool idea, it was a gutsy master stroke that solved or avoided problems with landing such a huge rover. "So crazy it just might work," in the words of NASA administrator Mike Griffin. The craziest thing is that the first time it had a chance to work was on Mars.
