Fitting end to a fantastic series

Although I enjoyed the mystery and tension of the earlier books more, I have to give Hugh full credit for sticking the landing. It's all too common for great starts to peter out, but not here! Loved the whole series and happy to see an adaptation come to the screen. Well deserved.

In the three books (Wool, Shift and Dust) that make up this omnibus edition, Hugh Howey has crafted a frighteningly plausible future, filled with fully realised, authentic characters. I hesitate to call it a dystopia, since it's a word that's often over-used - but the world imagined here certainly has dystopian elements, which are seen more as the series progresses and the layers are peeled back. The world-building here is thoughtful and intriguing, and the plot kept me hooked from the start - but ultimately, I think it's the characters that made the biggest impression on me in this series. They're flawed, believable and utterly human - they strive, fail, dream, despair, hope and fear just like all of us do. They do good things for bad reasons, and bad things for good reasons, and it is those flawed characters and their actions that drives the plot along.
