As a successful social media journalist with half a million followers, seventeen-year-old Cal is used to sharing his life online. But when his pilot father is selected for a highly publicized NASA mission to Mars, Cal and his family relocate from Brooklyn to Houston and are thrust into a media circus.

Amidst the chaos, Cal meets sensitive and mysterious Leon, another “Astrokid,” and finds himself falling head over heels—fast. As the frenzy around the mission grows, so does their connection. But when secrets about the program are uncovered, Cal must find a way to reveal the truth without hurting the people who have become most important to him.

Expertly capturing the thrill of first love and the self-doubt all teens feel, debut author Phil Stamper is a new talent to watch.

"The Gravity of Us": cute leisurely YA read, but lack of character development keeps it in low orbit

3 stars

High school junior Cal Lewis is a budding journalist in Brooklyn, New York, who has earned a social media following for his enterprising live streams in the city. But when his father is picked as the unlikely final astronaut for the Orpheus V mission, in which NASA will send humans to Mars, Cal's life is completely uprooted at a moment's notice, and his aspirations – including his BuzzFeed internship – shattered.

But the move to Clear Lake City, in the suburb of Houston, among other astronaut families, while upsetting, does not stop him from pursuing his goals. As two tragedies strike with the mission, Cal finds himself caught between the well-meaning NASA which has been hapless at getting social media traction for the mission, astronaut families that are not as perfect as they appear, and a vulturous reality TV operation that cares more about drama and rating than anything else. …

Not for me

I’ve had to stop reading this book halfway through. I though I could make it but it just wasn’t for me. Characters behaviour is erratic and the dialogue are so all over the place. It feels like the writing stopped and was started by a different person mid dialogue.

What do you do when your dad suddenly wants to be an astronaut and go to Mars for NASA? If he gets chosen (which you hope he won't) you have to move from your familiar Brooklyn neighborhood to Texas, of all places, and leave your best friend behind - as well as your budding journalism career. Cal (Calvin Junior) has a lot to come to terms with, and as if that weren't enough, there's StarWatch, who have turned the astronaut-families' lives into crappy TV drama.

3.5 Stars, but I'm rounding up so I don't drag the average down, since I'm probably not the target audience for this book. Queer YA with social media and astronaut storylines? Sign me up! This sweet first novel has compelling main plot lines and a well-rounded supporting cast with their own challenges. In fact, the only real "ding" I'd give this book is for giving most of the secondary characters some hefty issues (anxiety, depression, financial/housing insecurity) without enough time to really dive in and give them their full exploration. Even so, it was a fun first novel. I'll definitely check out other books by Phil Stamper.

Also: if you listen to the audio version, there's a nice "behind the scenes" at the end where the author talks about the process of making the audio – his thoughts on casting choices, etc. – that I found interesting.

Wow what a great story! It really had me hooked from the beginning. I loved the premise and storytelling in this. In fact, I liked the unique story so much, that I found the romance storyline to be a bit distracting. I came into this for the queer romance but ended up loving everything else about it. Side note, I listened to the audiobook with an afterword from the author and I found his explanation for why he wanted to write the book to be really charming.
