I almost DNFed this because it starts out a little too slow, but it was so short I decided to keep going. It ended up being a good time - maybe a 3.5 rounded up.

This is the story of a young man who saves a middle aged rich man's life, and then their lives get weirdly intertwined. Unreliable narrator to the max, which I enjoy. I also enjoyed this kind of exploration into the art world - the business, the corruption, the rich people rich peopling. A thriller that plunges you into the corrupted and corrupting LA art scene, told through the eyes of a man claiming to be drawn in by sheer happenstance. Most of the surprises, as they come, are expected, but the picture this book paints is rich and enjoyable.

You gotta love a compact, well structured story that manages to explore ideas about being a good, capable, genuine person set in a world - the world of high art - where authenticity is always in question. What’s really motivating everyone? A desire to be a good person? A desire for the security that comes with being rich and well-regarded? A true appreciation for art? Or maybe all of it at once?
