Review of 'Lady Audleys Secret Mary Elizabeth Braddon' on 'Goodreads'

3 stars

I should have read this some years ago for one of my English Literature classes, but gave up halfway through. Re-reading it, it turns out Lady Audley's Secret is less terrible than I thought. Also it's less obvious than the first few chapters indicate.
Compared to modern writing paces, the novel however is incredibly slow, the detective character unbelievably passive in his investigation.
Although the main female character, the anti-hero of the novel, was undoubtedly evil in the time the novel was first published, I can't help to sympathize with her from a more modern, more feminine point of view. In a time where women had nothing, what chances did she have?
