nerd teacher [books] reviewed Survivor: Titanic by Stephen Davies
Inclusion of often overlooked people, but still lacks a realistic view.

Out of the small series this book comes from, one of the best parts is that it includes Lebanese people; so many of the details about the Titanic always leave out the non-European (and, really, non-white) people that died. Meanwhile, there were a number of Lebanese people on the Titanic (not to mention Syrians). I really am quite happy that this author included this because they are almost never included.
I do dislike that they were able to base their story on deck plans and create something based on possible movement between the decks, but they couldn't be bothered to even partly explain away the whole thing about the 'women and children first' myth that was perpetuated. It's just tossed in there as if it were a fact in maritime law (which it's not).

It was really only on the Titanic that this was even a thing, not any other ship because it's actually 'every man for himself', and it was something the captain ordered (with the threat of violence to back it up). It continues this mythology, where women and children are less likely to survive. It'd have been nice for that to be incorporated as a more realistic view of what happened.
