Just read A Clockwork Orange

It's an alternate Manhattan where there is massive civil unrest and a crumbling government. Why? I guess that's not important.

A 12 year old girl makes a rapid descent from her upper middle class lifestyle to a Jabberwocky style street tuff.

The author invents a whole street slang which would be cool if there wasn't already AAVE. He has black characters in basically modern day Manhattan speaking a dialect that is so divorced from how people actually speak, it comes off as a pearl clutching grandmother's interpretation of Rapper's Delight.

I didn't enjoy the world building and I didn't buy the main character as a 12 year old, especially when her 10 year old sister read closer to a 6 year old. I did like the diary format.
