Maybe a 2.5 rounded by the time I got to the end. Grant makes a bizarre choice that I can’t wrap my mind around that drags the story out.

Definitely some notable differences from the movie. The changes in the movie are mostly for the better.

I’m giving this 3 stars because once it got going I was pulled along well enough and had fun.

But it took too long to get started. I’m torn on the science-y bits in here. It lends the story a substantial feeling, but often bogged the story down for me. Malcolm’s parts about chaos theory and abuses of science especially were really awkward. It wasn’t strong enough to really make a point for me. It felt tacked on to an otherwise fun adventure story. I think I’d have rated a pared down version of the book higher.

Quick review.

I've read several Crichton titles, and consider him pretty much a master or adept at the genre. Wasn't sure if Sphere would interest me (even if a book is well done, if it's not your sort of book, it's not for you), but there it was in the pile, so I started reading it about a week ago.

It seemed a slow starter, but that could have been me. The premise is that a team of people are sent to a deep water environment to investigate what turns out to be some kind of space ship (?) or time travel space ship (?) with an alien artifact (?) that has some strange effects on people.

Crichton seems to have done his homework, as usual, in terms of the technical stuff -- a deep-water habitat has its quirks.

This is more of a psychological thriller, although there is definitely …
