Doctor Impossible--evil genius, diabolical scientist, wannabe world dominator--languishes in a federal detention facility. He's lost his freedom, his girlfriend, and his hidden island fortress. Over the years he's tried to take over the world in every way imaginable: doomsday devices of all varieties (nuclear, thermonuclear, nanotechnological) and mass mind control. He's traveled backwards in time to change history, forward in time to escape it. He's commanded robot armies, insect armies, and dinosaur armies. Fungus army. Army of fish. Of rodents. Alien invasions. All failures. But not this time. This time it's going to be different... Fatale is a rookie superhero on her first day with the Champions, the world's most famous superteam. She's a patchwork woman of skin and chrome, a gleaming technological marvel built to be the next generation of warfare. I didn't much like it. The story itself was okay, and I kind of liked the part was "the champions" part, and maybe it's just that I found the personalities (well, the main personality) distasteful at best, but section on the villains was pretty bad.
For one thing, I could never tell whether the narrator speaking in the present, the past, even the future. Time in general, in the book was somewhat ethereal and unknowable. I don't know, overall, it was just a story that just didn't make or leave any kind of positive impression on me.

What novelistic insights he was able to offer into superheroic tropes were stale and unoriginal (the Wild Cards series did all of it better), his versions of the famous characters he didn't have the licenses to use were boring (Identity Crisis starred the actual Justice League, so I cared how those characters reacted to human tragedy, unlike these stiffs), and even the massive crossover events he seemed to relish describing in breathless paragraphs sounded dull. At least he had a clever way of framing the inexplicable nature of supervillains, ascribing it to a clinical condition with an acronym and everything, but that bit came early in the book, and never amounted to anything with the supervillain POV main character.

I don't know whether to blame the author or the advertising department for the first problem with this book: the fact that it is (possibly) supposed to be a comedy, but isn't actually funny.

It is, in reality, an extremely melancholy tale which, in and of itself, free from the comedy expectation, isn't terrible, but rather just mediocre.

The major problem lies in the fact that most of the book's appeal is in its supposed novelty. It's a quiet, cynical treatment of superheroes and what could be going on behind the iconic figures. To this end most of the characters are obvious analogues for famous comic book characters and the majority of the drama is made up of plays on similarly iconic tropes.

But if you've read any superhero comic books in the last 20 years, none of this is at all new to you given that the deconstruction of …

A very entertaining book that takes place in a world of superheroes and supervillians, where every notion you ever read in a comic book was actually true. The book follows the perspectives of two characters, Doctor Impossible, the evil genius from Iowa who tries to conquer the world repeatedly, and that of Fatale, the female cyborg with no memory of her past trying to come to grips with finding herself amongst the greatest of superheroes.

It's a wonderfully fun book, and the author has a delightful sense of humor that enjoys playing with, but never mocking, the material.
