Margaret Atwood ; traducció de l'anglès d'Ernest Riera

1 edition

I did not find this sequel quite as good as good as the Handmaid's Tale #1. That not withstanding, this is still an very good story/ read.

This particular tale appears to bring down the curtain on the Theocracy (Gilead) that 'was' once the United States. The author seems obviously (to my mind) influenced by recent world events. The tale quite clearly reflects the logical outcomes of right-wing philosophies and actions in the US.

Do not read either of the Handmaid Tale books if you are looking for enjoyment. Read them if you want to ponder the effects of extremism.

I had never read The Handmaid's Tale until this year and I enjoyed that so much that I was ready for more. I think reading both books back-to-back has helped me enjoy the latter book more than if I had read it months or years later.

I think I like the sequel more because I find Aunt Lydia's character more interesting than Offred from the first book. I find her a rich, multi-faceted, character who is certainly morally ambiguous.

I really enjoyed the constant changing between the three main narrative viewpoints, and the way those narratives slowly, but surely, coalesce as you reach the end of the book.

I loved the Handmaid's Tale, and I liked this book, too. The story takes us back to Gilead, but also to Canada. We learn more about the Aunts and how Gilead is founded and ruled. Not as ground-breaking as the original book, but definitely a good sequel, no reason to be concerned, Dear Reader.

I won't go into too many plot details in the book. I was not caught up in the same hype that many people seem to have been caught up in surrounding "The Testaments" by Margaret Atwood. I agree with many reviews that say that there was a clash between people's expectations and the finished product. But I try hard to separate out my expectations and the intent of the author, which I usually respect the most. Atwood is a brilliant writer - she can write in many different genres and styles and still make the landing. So, I would say that I liked "The Testaments," though I think that "The Handmaid's Tale" is a better book mainly due to the way the narrative is hemmed in by the restrictions of the narrator. Part of its appeal is all that we do not know about the regime and its circumstances. But …

While I don't believe this novel is as trite as other reviewers have suggested, the occasion and project of this work are very different from Handmaid's Tale and I'm grateful to Atwood for choosing optimism. It isn't fair to ask an artist to write in the midst of a storm. I believe the best novels about the beginning of our century are still decades off, but for what this is, a continuation of an impactful story partially written by other people as a television series so entwined with our political moment it has become an active synecdochical representation in international activist movements, it is incredible. I mean just for existing. Atwood was able to produce some kind of meaningful content knee deep in a river's flow.

Some aspects that struck me while reading: her use of wordplay in this novel may not have had the weight of the first novel …

Recommended. I found this compulsively readable -- it's suspenseful, and I love how the three narratives intertwine. It offers more hope than "The Handmaid's Tale" (which I could not bring myself to re-read).
There is no Handmaid narrator in this book. The viewpoints are from other girls and women, finding their difficult ways in Gilead, and finding cracks through which to fight back.

Growing up in Canada I had to read The Handmaid's Tale in high school, way back when - and it's not an easy read when you're 16 or so. We had an assignment afterwards to write an additional chapter of the book about what happened next. I wish I could remember what I wrote -- but The Testaments is the author's answer to that same assignment.

Offred of the first book is no longer the narrator, no longer even directly present in the story, which is instead told through the writings of Aunt Lydia and the recorded testimony of two teenage girls, one from Gilead and one from Canada. This gives the book a much different feeling from The Handmaid's Tale, in which we have a much more limited, claustrophobic view as we see everything only from Offred's eyes. In The Testaments we have a much broader view of Gilead …

An amazing followup to the original, which I read 30 years ago and seemed so impossible at the time.

It's impossible to give a thorough review of The Testaments without giving away important plot revelations. In the promotional material, only two of the three viewpoint characters are revealed - Aunt Lydia (yes, THAT Aunt Lydia), and a privileged daughter of a Commander. The third character is a great one, and the various revelations that tie into both the original novel and even into the Hulu TV series are well-done.

Written in first-person from three unreliable narrators, all wrapped in that same future academic symposium, The Testaments is a wonderful novel, powerful and hopeful, and a little brutal at times, as befits the setting. Highly recommended.
